Your Members Are Your Best Outreach
The most powerful outreach tool your church has isn’t an account. It’s people.
When a church decides to take evangelism online, most of the attention goes to the church’s own accounts. The page, the posts, the videos going out under the congregation’s name. That’s good and worth doing. But it quietly overlooks the single largest source of reach your church already has, and it’s sitting in the chairs every Sunday.
Your members. Every one of them carries a phone, and on that phone is a network of friends, family, coworkers, and old classmates that your church’s official account will never touch. Add it all up across the whole congregation and it dwarfs anything a single page could ever reach on its own. The most powerful outreach tool your church has isn’t an account. It’s people.
Why a Member’s Share Is Worth More Than a Church’s Post
People simply trust a friend more than someone they’re unfamiliar with.
When your church’s account posts a lesson, it reaches whoever already follows you, most of whom are part of the congregation. Good, but limited.
When an ordinary member shares that same lesson, it lands in front of people who know and trust them. It carries the quiet endorsement of a real relationship. A stranger scrolling past a church’s post keeps scrolling. But when they see their trusted friend shared something, with a simple note like “this really encouraged me this week,” they stop. That’s not an ad anymore. That’s a recommendation from someone they love.
This is just word of mouth, which has always been how the Gospel spread fastest, now carried through the tools people actually use. Andrew went and found his brother Peter. The woman at the well ran back and told her whole town. It wasn’t complicated. They simply told the people already in their lives what they had found.
Every member of your congregation can do exactly that today, with a reach their grandparents could never have imagined.
Why Members Don’t Share, and How to Help
If this is so powerful, why don’t more members do it? Usually it isn’t apathy. It’s uncertainty. They don’t know what would be appropriate to share, they feel awkward or preachy putting faith on their feed, or they simply never thought of themselves as someone whose share could matter. Most people are waiting for permission and a little guidance.
So give it to them. This is mostly a matter of equipping and encouraging the people who already love their church family. A few simple things go a long way. Give them things genuinely worth sharing, content that is warm and helpful rather than stiff or salesy, so they’re proud to put their name next to it.
Make sharing effortless, one tap, no hoops. Show them it’s normal by having leaders and respected members do it first. And gently teach them that a short, honest, personal word in their own voice will always outperform a polished graphic. “I needed to hear this today” does more than any slogan.
Then celebrate it. When a member shares and a conversation starts, notice it, thank them, tell the story. People do more of what they see honored.
Everyone Gets to Be a Worker
There’s something beautiful underneath all of this. The Great Commission was never handed to a marketing department. It was given to every disciple. Not just preachers and elders, but the quiet member in the third row who would never dream of standing up front, yet whose simple share might be the first time a searching friend ever encounters a word of hope.
So don’t only build a church presence online. Build a congregation of everyday workers who know their voice matters and know how to use it. Hand your fellow members something worth sharing, show them it’s welcome, and then watch the seed travel down roads your official account could never reach. The fields are white for harvest, and you already have more workers than you realized. They’re sitting right there with you every week.
